Expensive though they may be, rare vintage wines can be a good investment opportunity, or just a great way to spoil yourself. Fine vintage wines are typically produced in areas like France (Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne in particular), Italy, Portugal, Rhone, Spain and Germany. These wines are usually produced in limited quantities – it’s no good buying a bottle of Lambrini from Tesco and selling it on in ten years’ time.     • The ‘vintage’ is the year in which the grapes were grown for that particular wine. Typically, hot weather (especially when the grapes are picked around September) makes for better wine.
    • Genuine ports and champagnes have ‘declared vintages’, which means that, in that particular year, every producer made wine from that year’s grapes. In ‘non-vintage’ years, grapes are blended from other years to meet demand.
    • If you’re thinking of investing in vintage wines, make sure you do your research, bear in mind that the value of vintage wines can go up or down, and only buy wines in original wooden cases of 12 bottles.
    • Generally, white wine matures faster than red, and your vintage wine will be slower to mature if it has a higher alcohol content.
